Diogo Sampaio Lima is an Assistant Professor of Economics (tenured) in the Department of Economics at Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics. His research lies in international macroeconomics, with a focus on sovereign debt and default and on macro-prudential regulation. He studies how governments borrow and repay in international capital markets, how default risk shapes economic outcomes, and how financial regulation interacts with global capital flows.

He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Indiana University, Bloomington (2019), and earned his earlier degrees at ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics and Management, University of Lisbon. Alongside his academic training, he has held research positions at the Bank of Portugal, where his work informed his interest in sovereign finance and financial stability.
